Dolphins in Japan's Coastal Waters: A Rare Occurrence
The mysterious presence of dolphins in Japan's coastal waters has long intrigued locals and scientists alike. For years, residents along the Sea of Japan coast have reported occasional sightings of these marine mammals, while local fishers have also spotted them from time to time. However, the frequency and purpose of these visits remained largely unknown.
A recent study by researchers from Kyoto University has shed light on this enigma. By employing passive acoustic monitoring, the team listened for dolphin sounds underwater using special recording devices. Their findings revealed a fascinating pattern: dolphins visit two bays along the Sea of Japan coast only occasionally, with their sounds being detected about once every 10 days.
The research, published in the journal Marine Mammal Science, focused on Wakasa Bay near Obama City and Aso Bay near Tsushima City. These coastal areas had been the subject of local reports and sightings, making them ideal locations for study.
The Sea of Japan's unique geography, partially enclosed by Japanese islands and the Eurasian continent, has contributed to the scarcity of information about these small toothed whales, known as odontocetes. The study's authors emphasize the importance of local connections, as the idea for the research emerged from conversations with people living near the coast.
The passive acoustic monitoring technique, involving the use of hydrophones, recorded various sounds made by dolphins and other odontocetes. These sounds included echolocation clicks, essential for navigation and prey detection, and whistles, primarily used for communication.
The monitoring period, spanning nearly three years in Wakasa Bay and two years in Aso Bay, was made possible with the help of local communities. Residents and fishers played a crucial role in placing and retrieving the recording devices, while also sharing valuable information about dolphin sightings and even taking photographs of the animals.
The recordings confirmed the presence of dolphins in both bays but revealed a surprising level of rarity. Dolphin sounds were detected only about once every 10 days, indicating that these coastal areas are visited intermittently rather than occupied continuously.
Furthermore, the study uncovered intriguing differences in the whistles recorded in the two bays. In Aso Bay, where background underwater noise was higher, the whistle characteristics differed from those in the quieter Wakasa Bay. The researchers are still uncertain whether these variations are due to the noisier environment or if they reflect natural differences among dolphin groups.
Based on the recorded sounds, sightings, and photographs, the researchers identified the visiting animals as Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins. While the evidence strongly suggests this species, the study could not definitively identify every individual animal.
The findings of this research hold significant importance for several reasons.
